Why doors come off track

Why you should not force it
An off-track door is unbalanced and under uneven tension. Running the opener can bend panels, snap more cables, or pull the whole track off the wall — and a door that drops can cause serious injury. Stop using the opener the moment you notice it.
How it is repaired
A technician first secures the door and releases tension safely, then inspects the cables, rollers, and track. Damaged parts are replaced, the track is realigned, and the door is re-balanced. Most off-track repairs are completed the same visit.
The five-minute check before you call
With the opener unplugged and the door left exactly where it is, look at the two lift cables that run from the bottom corners of the door up to the drums at each end of the torsion bar. If one is slack, frayed or hanging loose, that side has lost its lift and the door is being held by the other cable alone. Do not touch it. If both cables look tight and the door is simply sitting crooked in the track, the likely cause is a roller that popped out or a bent track section, which is a smaller repair.
Why an off-track door is a two-person job
A 16-foot double door weighs well over a hundred kilograms and, when it is off the track, that weight is no longer carried by the springs in a controlled way. Putting it back means supporting the door, releasing the remaining spring tension safely, correcting the cable on the drum, re-seating the rollers and then re-balancing the whole system. A technician does this with locking pliers on the track, winding bars for the springs and a second set of hands for the door. It is not a job for a stepladder and a friend.
Preventing a repeat
Most doors that come off the track once will do it again unless the cause is fixed rather than just the symptom. That usually means replacing worn rollers with 13-ball nylon rollers, re-securing loose track brackets into solid framing rather than drywall, checking the cable for fraying at the bottom bracket, and confirming the door is balanced so the opener is not dragging one side. If a vehicle hit the door, the bottom section may also be bent enough to bind, and a bent section will keep pulling the rollers out no matter how many times the track is straightened.
