Grimsby is squeezed onto a strip between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario, and that geography does two things to a garage door: it puts lake wind on the front of it and escarpment runoff at the bottom of it. We are about 25 minutes down the QEW from our Burlington showroom.
Older homes, some of them converted lakeside cottages, with small detached garages and non-standard openings. Wood doors on extension springs are still common. We convert to torsion hardware and add safety cables, or fit a carriage-style steel door that suits the older street.
2000s subdivisions between the QEW and the lake with insulated double doors and belt-drive openers. Failures are mostly electronic, and the lake wind loads the door on the way up more than people expect, which wears rollers faster.
Rural properties above the brow with detached shops, wide doors and high-lift track. Different springs and drums than a house door, and we carry them.
The Hamilton side of the line, which we serve from the same truck. Mostly 1990s to 2010s homes with standard double doors reaching their first or second spring replacement.
Grimsby doors take weather from both sides. Wind coming off Lake Ontario hits the front of a door on the flat land below the escarpment, and a wide door under wind load wears its rollers and bends its track faster than a sheltered one. Above the brow, runoff and freeze-thaw off the escarpment ice the bottom seal to the slab in winter.
Two practical rules for Grimsby: check that your rollers are nylon rather than bare steel, because steel rollers under wind load chew the track; and never force a frozen door in January, because the opener will tear the bottom section before the ice gives.
Grimsby door stuck? We are 25 minutes down the QEW.
Call (416) 666-6745No travel fee. We dispatch from Appleby Line in Burlington, about 25 minutes down the QEW. Grimsby, Winona and Beamsville are regular stops for us.
Wind load pushes the door against the track on the way up. If the rollers are bare steel or worn, that shows up as noise and eventually as bent track. Nylon rollers and a track check normally fix it.
Yes. Wide shop doors and high-lift track need different springs and drums than a house door, and we stock them.
It can be. An extension spring with no containment cable is the most dangerous failure in this trade. We convert to torsion hardware and add safety cables, which is safer and quieter.
Every repair carries a 3-year labour warranty, with the manufacturer warranty on parts. Our technicians are licensed and insured.
Book before 1pm and we normally reach Grimsby the same day. For a door that will not close or a snapped spring, we run 24/7 emergency service.
